E-truck drives 16.8% further

An SVT was integrated in a 3.5 ton E-truck, extensively tested and fully validated in an accredited test center and compared to the performance of the commonly used single gear transmission in that same vehicle.

Main test result: 16.8% further driving with the same amount of electricity

  • Besides that, the SVT can enhance the vehicle’s climbing capabilities and increase its top speed by 50%;
  • The measured autonomy improvement can also be used to reduce the battery pack, lowering weight and cost;
  • Compared to a 2-speed DCT with hypothetically the same high-level efficiency map as MAZARO’s technology,  simulations indicate the SVT will still drive the e-truck 4.2% further in a WLTC and 5.4% further in an NEDC, with the same amount of electricity.

Technical background of the demo project:

Tests were performed by an independent test and homologation center. The baseline for the energy consumption measurements was a 3.5 ton delivery truck in which the diesel engine was replaced by a UQM 145 Powerphase motor, a single step fixed gear reduction of 2.68:1 connecting the E-motor to the propshaft.

Being the reference, the energy consumption of driving twice a WLTC cycle (limited at 80 km/h) according to standard procedures was quantified by measuring the energy taken from the electric grid.

Then the gearbox was replaced by MAZARO’s SVT230, including the transmission controller and hydraulic powerpack. The E-truck, with MAZARO’s transmission integrated, was fully functional for driving on the road.

Then again, the same WLTC driving cycle was performed twice. The same amount of braking energy recovery was programmed to ensure that the energy savings were solely created by the transmission.

As the energy consumption was compared by measuring the energy taken from the electric grid, the hydraulic and the electric power consumption were included as well.

The transmission controller continuously adapts the transmission ratio to the actual driving condition.

Temporary offer till mid 2020

This E-truck, equipped with an SVT accelerates exceptionally well, it drives uphill on slopes of more than 35% without any problem and its top speed is increased from 80 to 127 km/h. Without measuring equipment, it is not possible to detect that ratios are changing. One doesn’t feel or hear that there is a transmission inside. The E-truck accelerates fiercely but smoothly and drives 16.8% further than without SVT.
